UTEP Panera Bread & C-Store Renovation
El Paso, TX

A Full-Service Campus Build-Out by Reliant Construction

At Reliant Construction, we specialize in transforming existing spaces into high-performing environments that serve real people every day. One of our recent projects—the renovation of a Panera Bread café and campus convenience store at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP)—is a strong example of how we bring that mission to life.

Located inside UTEP’s busy Union Building, this project required careful planning, precise execution, and constant coordination to deliver a modern, fully operational space without disrupting campus activity.

Bringing New Life to an Existing Space

The goal of this project was simple: convert an existing interior space into a fully functional Panera Bread Bakery-Café and C-Store that meets both university needs and national brand standards.

But behind that goal was a complex construction process.

The project involved a complete interior renovation—removing outdated materials, reconfiguring the layout, and installing all new systems and finishes. From demolition to final walkthrough, Reliant Construction managed every phase of the build.

A Turnkey Construction Approach

Reliant Construction served as the general contractor, overseeing all aspects of the project from start to finish. This included managing subcontractors, coordinating trades, and ensuring that every element of the project met strict quality and safety standards.

Our scope of work included:

  • Full interior demolition and site preparation
  • Construction of new walls, soffits, and structural elements
  • Installation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems
  • Commercial kitchen infrastructure and utility coordination
  • Installation of flooring, tile, ceilings, and paint
  • Millwork and finish carpentry
  • Equipment installation and final system connections

Every component of the project was completed in compliance with applicable Texas building, fire, electrical, and accessibility codes.

Building in Phases for Efficiency

To keep the project on track and minimize disruption to the surrounding environment, the work was completed in two clearly defined phases.

Phase One: Demolition & Preparation

The first phase focused on preparing the space for construction. This included:

  • Installing temporary construction walls to protect adjacent areas
  • Safely shutting down and rerouting utilities
  • Removing ceilings, flooring, and wall systems
  • Preparing the space for new plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems

This stage laid the groundwork for a clean, efficient build moving forward.

Phase Two: Construction & Finishes

With the space fully prepared, the team moved into the build-out phase:

  • Installation of new plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems
  • Framing and finishing of walls and ceilings
  • Installation of drywall, insulation, and paint
  • Flooring and wall finishes, including tile and coverings
  • Installation of ceiling systems and lighting
  • Placement and connection of kitchen and retail equipment

Final inspections and punch-list completion

Working in an Active Campus Environment

One of the biggest challenges of this project was its location.

Because the work took place inside an active university building, construction had to be carefully scheduled to avoid disrupting students, staff, and daily operations. Much of the work was performed during off-hours, including overnight shifts, to keep the campus running smoothly.

This required:

  • Detailed scheduling and coordination
  • Strict safety and cleanliness standards
  • Constant communication with stakeholders

Our team successfully balanced construction efficiency with the needs of the university community.

Coordination Across Multiple Trades

Projects like this involve many moving parts. From plumbing and electrical to HVAC and finish work, each trade plays a critical role—and timing is everything.

Reliant Construction coordinated multiple subcontractors and vendors to ensure that each phase of work was completed in the right sequence. This level of coordination helped prevent delays, reduce rework, and keep the project on schedule.

Delivering a High-Quality, Functional Space

The completed project is a modern, welcoming environment that serves both dining and retail needs within a compact footprint.

The space includes:

  • A fully operational Panera Bread café
  • A campus convenience store (C-Store)
  • Efficient back-of-house kitchen and service areas
  • Clean, durable finishes designed for high-traffic use

Every detail—from layout to finishes—was built to meet Panera’s brand standards while also aligning with UTEP’s operational requirements.

This project highlights what sets Reliant Construction apart:
